Part 1/2 The Fight Against Diabetes

During Singapore National Rally 2017, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long mentioned 1 in 9 Singaporeans has diabetes and it is very serious.

According to the forecast number, 1 in 2 Singaporean have a chance of developing Type II diabetes in their lifetime by 2050. This is a very concerning number.

What is Diabetes?

What is diabetes and how does it develop? As food enters the body, it is broken down into glucose, the basic fuel of the body. The pancreas, an organ situated close to the stomach, secretes the hormone insulin. Insulin enhances cell absorption of glucose in the blood for the body to obtain energy. Thus, insulin plays an important role to ensure the normal functioning of the body. As the insulin-producing pancreatic cells are destroyed in diabetics, insufficient insulin production leads to ineffective absorption of glucose by the cells.

Diabetes is a killer disease

Diabetes is a killer disease that can have debilitating effects on many organs in the body. It is often associated with other life-threatening ailments such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, blindness, kidney malfunction, nervous system disorders, dental problems, amputations and pregnancy complications.

There are 3 types of diabetes

1)Type I diabetes - A type of autoimmune disease. To survive, people with type 1 diabetes must have insulin delivered by injection or a pump. In most cases, type I diabetes has a genetic component and is usually prevalent among children and young adults.

2)Type II diabetes - The most common form of diabetes accounting to 90-95 per cent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Type II diabetes is associated with obesity, family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, physical inactivity and diet.

3)Gestational diabetes

Food Glycemic Index

The sweetness of food is not a good indication of its sugar content. All types of food break down into sugars once they are digested. The lower the glycemic index (GI), the more ideal the food is as a source of nutrition for diabetics. Diabetics must remember that they should not only be concerned about the sugar content in foods, but also more importantly their glycemic index.

Part 2/2 Worried about Type II Diabetes. Learn how fiber can help you?

How can we be free from diabetes medication?

The key to diabetes prevention lies with a person's daily lifestyle. It is very important to eat a balance diet, exercise and maintain a healthy body weight.

What are the excellent foods for Diabetics?
1) Consume sufficient amount of fiber - Psyllium husk and Wheat Bran

Calorie free fiber is found only in plant food sources. Regular consumption of fiber aids in digestion and can help the removal of toxins from the gastrointestinal tract. Fiber is a natural food processor - increasing the body's ability to absorb useful nutrients while encouraging the motility and viscosity of gastrointestinal contents during digestion.

Psyllium husk and wheat bran among the most fiber rich plant foods. Increase intake of these plant food can help decrease cholesterol levels as well as regulate blood glucose levels. A study revealed that type 2 diabetics who were given 5.1g of psyllium husk for 8 weeks saw a significant improvement in their glycemic and lipid values. There was also a marked decrease in their serum total and LDL cholesterol concentrations.

2) Soy

Soy has a low glycemic index, which means that when digested, it stabilizes blood glucose levels. In addition soy is also a good source of soluble fiber. Soy is easily broken down in the body and is gentler on the digestive system. One complication that arises from diabetes is kidney disease. Over 20% of diabetics develop impaired kidney function that can cause kidney failure. Thus, diabetics must exercise caution when consuming animal protein as high levels may harm the kidneys. Studies have shown that soy protein is significantly better at aiding renal function than animal protein. Besides kidney disease, diabetics often have an increased risk of heart disease and arteriosclerosis. In fact, cardiovascular disease occurs 2-4 times more frequently with diabetics than in the general population. Research indicates that linolenic acid - an essential unsaturated fatty acid found in soybeans - may help to lower the cholesterol levels, reduce the incidence of arteriosclerosis, decrease the fat deposition in arterial walls and thus lower the risk of acquiring coronary heart disease.

3) Bitter Gourd

Bitter gourd is known for its ability to lower blood glucose level. It has antidiabetic benefits and contains compounds like polypeptide-P, charatin and vicine which improved blood sugar levels.

4) Ginseng Berry

ginseng berry
Researchers at the University of Chicago recently reported that ginseng berry extract holds promise for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. The nutrient rich ginseng berry contains Ginsenoside Re, a substance that can contribute to the creation of a new class of anti-diabetic medications.

5) Grape seed

grapeseed
Diabetic retinopathy a disease that can lead to blindness is a potential complication arising from diabetes. Diabetes affects the circulatory system of the retina by weakening the arteries in the eye and causing them to leak. The leaky vessels encourage swelling and edema in the retina, thus affecting vision. Statistics have indicated that at least 12 % of diabetics who suffer from diabetes for more than 30 years have lost their sight through diabetic retinopathy. However, researchers have noted that diabetics can effectively treat and prevent the onset of diabetic retinopathy through good nutrition. High on the list of nutritious foods is grape seed extract. Grape seed extract contains a very strong antioxidant called Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin (OPC). This antioxidant is reported to be 20x more powerful than vitamin C and 50x stronger than vitamin E. OPC strengthens capillaries, arteries and veins thus improving blood circulation. In a recent study, 30 diabetics were given 50mg of OPC 3x daily for 2 months while 10 were given placebo pills. The group that received OPC showed improved diabetic retinopathy while the group that received the placebo showed worsened retinopathy. Thus, OPC has proven to be valuable source of nutrition to promote health among diabetics.

5) Acelora Cherries & Blueberries

People who have diabetics have lowered immunity so their ability to fight against diseases and infections is weak. They need high phytochemicals wholesome plants to help fight against free radical damage and to nourish the body immune system.

We have the combination Everstay D, Stay D and Oxyginberry to help control the blood sugar level.

Everstay D contain soybean, psyllium husk, wheat bran and vanilla.

Stay D contain bitter melon, ginseng, blueberry and acelora cherry

Oxyginberry contain cactus, cactus fruit, ginseng berry, grape seed, seaweed and rose.

Why is it important to have a healthy breakfast? What is the healthy breakfast criteria?

Breakfast is important because it literally breaks a fast; the overnight fast. Eating a healthy breakfast supplies our bodies with essential nutrients that help keep energy level up throughout the day.

However, we live in a fast paced life, most people eat in a rush or skip their meal.

What will happen when we skip breakfast?
1) Gain Weight
2) Fatigue
3) Not able to concentrate
4) Lack of Energy
5) Raise the risk of heart disease
6) Decrease in metabolism
7) Increase the risk of diabetes

5 Reasons Why Breakfast Is Important

Is the below food a good choice for breakfast?

We should avoid eating smoked or cured meats. Ham, bacon and sausage may contain sodium nitrate, which is converted by your body into a cancer-causing agent. Other examples of food to avoid are salami, prosciutto, deli meat and char siu.

Reduce the intake of animal-based foods like fried eggs, cheese, butter and milk as they are high in fat and cholesterol contents are increase the risk of heart disease.

Refrain from eating high calorie foods as it contribute to weight gain and obesity. Avoid foods like hash brown, croissant, youtiao, deep fried bun, scallion pancake and jian bing.

Is drinking fruit juices as healthy as eating whole fruits?

Fruit juices are not as nutritious as fruits in their original forms. Fruits contain many beneficial nutrients, such as dietary fiber, that are stored in their skins and pulps. But the skin and pulp are often removed during the juicing process. By extracting juice from fruits, we get a substance that is rich in fructose and stripped of fiber. This means that we take in more calories when drinking fruit juice compared to eating whole fruits.

What is the healthy breakfast criteria?

1) High in dietary fiber - Psyllium husk
2) Soy - high in plant protein, 2 times protein in meat, 3 times protein in eggs and 12 times proteins in cow's milk
3) Wide variety of fruits and vegetables of different colors.

How did I lose weight? How to lose weight healthily?

I started taking Oxyginberry because I was breastfeeding my 3rd child and I thought it would be good nourishment for mother and baby.  I stopped taking Oxyginberry for a few months after my Oxyginberry supply went out and back then I didn't fully understand the benefits of taking Oxyginberry.

Until last year, I started taking Oxyginberry and a friend of mine commented that I lose weight. Later I learned that, Ginseng Berry is an ingredient in Oxyginberry that can increase the metabolism of the body. During this time, I also learned about the importance of a healthy breakfast and started on a healthy breakfast challenge. Soy is an ingredient in Everstay-D it can aid weight loss by boosting metabolism. The combination of wheat bran and psyllium husk also provide more fiber in the body to aid digestion.

I start to look into increasing more fiber in our family diet. Fiber aids weight control. Fiber also detoxifies to reveal beautiful skin. In the liver, toxins are contained in bile acids so they can be secreted together with fiber. The body needs an adequate amount of fiber for this process. A lack of fiber may hinder the body from flushing out toxins quickly. When this happens, the liver may overworked and will no longer be able to clear toxins from the body. Some signs of stress liver are skin acne, rashes, obesity, chronic fatigue or puffy eyes.

It is also a bonus that I start to lose weight after taking the Gengki Breakfast. My friends, neighbors and relatives started commenting that I am slimmer compare to before. I was very happy when I can start fitting into a S size compare to M size previously. In total, I lose 5 kg of weight.

My next mission is to consistently incorporate exercise in my routine. I was very happy that my hubby was looking after the kids playing with friends at the playground last week while I jogged to the beach.

This picture was taken beginning of last year.  My waist line was quite huge and the belly somehow expanded with the no of kids I have. I am still fitting into my clothes that I bought after the birth of my 2nd child. The pants was a bit tighter.

This two pictures was taken right before Chinese New Year and noticed that my jeans are loose.

I was very happy to be able to fit into a size S again and went crazy shopping for new clothes this Chinese New Year.

The below information is extracted from "Nutrition Immunity Longevity" book written by Dr Jau-Fei Chen from the topic on Obesity.

Dangers of Obesity

Obese individual face inconveniences: difficulty walking, trouble finding clothes that fit and difficulty fitting in bus and plane seats. What's more, severe obesity in the 40-45 BMI range cuts life spans by 8-10 years. In the long run, obesity can impair the immune system, thus increasing the risk of developing various diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis, stroke and allergy.

Improper Weight Loss Method

Weight loss can help to prevent various diseases. However, improper weight loss method will waste money, time and endanger health. Improper weight loss method can cause malnutrition.

1) Improper dieting - It involves excessively suppressing one's appetite to reduce weight. Unbalance nutrition makes the body unable to defend itself against diseases.

2) High Protein Diet - Eating meat as a staple food can easily create a feeling of fullness, hence reducing other food. The risk are meat is high in saturated fat. eating large amounts of high fat foods for a prolonged period raises the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and several types of cancer.

3) All fruit diet - A fruit diet does not provide enough nutrition. Prolonged malnutrition will cause immunity to weaken and will lead to illness.

4) Vegetarian diet - Vegetarians eat starchy foods such as bread and rice to create a greater feeling of fullness. Vegetarian food is often fried for taste. Vegetable oil used in vegetarian diets is high in calories and excessive intake can lead to weight gain.  Some vegetarian foods are highly processed and contain chemicals, additives and preservatives that are not food for health.

5) Diet Drugs - Most users of diet drugs do not understand the drugs side effects.

Here are some testimonial of customers weight reduce with Nutritional Immunology approach.

What is the most important meal of the day? What is a healthy breakfast?

During my flight back to my hometown, I came across an article on "Breakfast around the world" and "What is the most important meal of the day". As I would like my family to eat healthy, I have changed their diet a little since last year.

We no longer have bread, eggs and pancakes everyday. Instead we will include more fruits, soy and high fiber food in our morning breakfast.

During the Chinese New Year, our family will do a lot of visiting to relatives house and there are open house and constant eating. We have food overload during this trip. Therefore, during this trip I packed Everstay D, Vegecolour and Oxyginberry for my breakfast.

Everstay D contains soybean, psyillum husk and wheat bran which are high in dietary fiber. Soybean is a plant protein that is high in dietary fiber and help in digestion. During my trip, Everstay-D is able to provide me the convenience of having enough fiber in my diet and I do not have to worry about constipation due to lack of fiber.

Vegecolour contains 28 types of dried freeze vegetables. It saves my cleaning and cooking time and I don't have to worry about pesticide residue. Here are details on Vegecolour and Everstay-D.

Oxyginberry contains cactus, cactus fruit, ginseng berry, seaweed, rose and grape seed. They are the best food to kickstart my day and nourish the immune system.  What is Oxyginberry and many have benefited from this drink.

I had noticed that I lose weight and have better energy when I eat a healthy breakfast.

I started my Chinese New Year with  Everstay D and Vege Color breakfast. They are low in calories, high in dietary fiber, no oil or sugar and no cholesterol.

The below article is extracted from  Magazine by FireFly. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating a healthy breakfast is linked to increase performance and concentration at both work and school. A healthy breakfast can help with strength and physical endurance. Breakfast is linked to lower cholesterol levels and can help with weight control.

It was very interesting to read this article on "Breakfast around the world"  Magazine by FireFly. The breakfast in this articles are also luxury food that we cannot afford to eat daily. The foods are either fried, oily, sliced meat, eggs, butter, sandwiches that are either high in fat, cholesterol and calories. Eating too much oily, and cholesterol food can cause plague to build up in arteries which can lead to heart disease. The processed meat like ham, bacon and sausages has been linked to an increased risk of cancer.
