Part 1/2 The Fight Against Diabetes

During Singapore National Rally 2017, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long mentioned 1 in 9 Singaporeans has diabetes and it is very serious.

According to the forecast number, 1 in 2 Singaporean have a chance of developing Type II diabetes in their lifetime by 2050. This is a very concerning number.

What is Diabetes?

What is diabetes and how does it develop? As food enters the body, it is broken down into glucose, the basic fuel of the body. The pancreas, an organ situated close to the stomach, secretes the hormone insulin. Insulin enhances cell absorption of glucose in the blood for the body to obtain energy. Thus, insulin plays an important role to ensure the normal functioning of the body. As the insulin-producing pancreatic cells are destroyed in diabetics, insufficient insulin production leads to ineffective absorption of glucose by the cells.

Diabetes is a killer disease

Diabetes is a killer disease that can have debilitating effects on many organs in the body. It is often associated with other life-threatening ailments such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, blindness, kidney malfunction, nervous system disorders, dental problems, amputations and pregnancy complications.

There are 3 types of diabetes

1)Type I diabetes - A type of autoimmune disease. To survive, people with type 1 diabetes must have insulin delivered by injection or a pump. In most cases, type I diabetes has a genetic component and is usually prevalent among children and young adults.

2)Type II diabetes - The most common form of diabetes accounting to 90-95 per cent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Type II diabetes is associated with obesity, family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, physical inactivity and diet.

3)Gestational diabetes

Food Glycemic Index

The sweetness of food is not a good indication of its sugar content. All types of food break down into sugars once they are digested. The lower the glycemic index (GI), the more ideal the food is as a source of nutrition for diabetics. Diabetics must remember that they should not only be concerned about the sugar content in foods, but also more importantly their glycemic index.

Part 2/2 Worried about Type II Diabetes. Learn how fiber can help you?

How can we be free from diabetes medication?

The key to diabetes prevention lies with a person's daily lifestyle. It is very important to eat a balance diet, exercise and maintain a healthy body weight.

What are the excellent foods for Diabetics?
1) Consume sufficient amount of fiber - Psyllium husk and Wheat Bran

Calorie free fiber is found only in plant food sources. Regular consumption of fiber aids in digestion and can help the removal of toxins from the gastrointestinal tract. Fiber is a natural food processor - increasing the body's ability to absorb useful nutrients while encouraging the motility and viscosity of gastrointestinal contents during digestion.

Psyllium husk and wheat bran among the most fiber rich plant foods. Increase intake of these plant food can help decrease cholesterol levels as well as regulate blood glucose levels. A study revealed that type 2 diabetics who were given 5.1g of psyllium husk for 8 weeks saw a significant improvement in their glycemic and lipid values. There was also a marked decrease in their serum total and LDL cholesterol concentrations.

2) Soy

Soy has a low glycemic index, which means that when digested, it stabilizes blood glucose levels. In addition soy is also a good source of soluble fiber. Soy is easily broken down in the body and is gentler on the digestive system. One complication that arises from diabetes is kidney disease. Over 20% of diabetics develop impaired kidney function that can cause kidney failure. Thus, diabetics must exercise caution when consuming animal protein as high levels may harm the kidneys. Studies have shown that soy protein is significantly better at aiding renal function than animal protein. Besides kidney disease, diabetics often have an increased risk of heart disease and arteriosclerosis. In fact, cardiovascular disease occurs 2-4 times more frequently with diabetics than in the general population. Research indicates that linolenic acid - an essential unsaturated fatty acid found in soybeans - may help to lower the cholesterol levels, reduce the incidence of arteriosclerosis, decrease the fat deposition in arterial walls and thus lower the risk of acquiring coronary heart disease.

3) Bitter Gourd

Bitter gourd is known for its ability to lower blood glucose level. It has antidiabetic benefits and contains compounds like polypeptide-P, charatin and vicine which improved blood sugar levels.

4) Ginseng Berry

ginseng berry
Researchers at the University of Chicago recently reported that ginseng berry extract holds promise for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. The nutrient rich ginseng berry contains Ginsenoside Re, a substance that can contribute to the creation of a new class of anti-diabetic medications.

5) Grape seed

grapeseed
Diabetic retinopathy a disease that can lead to blindness is a potential complication arising from diabetes. Diabetes affects the circulatory system of the retina by weakening the arteries in the eye and causing them to leak. The leaky vessels encourage swelling and edema in the retina, thus affecting vision. Statistics have indicated that at least 12 % of diabetics who suffer from diabetes for more than 30 years have lost their sight through diabetic retinopathy. However, researchers have noted that diabetics can effectively treat and prevent the onset of diabetic retinopathy through good nutrition. High on the list of nutritious foods is grape seed extract. Grape seed extract contains a very strong antioxidant called Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin (OPC). This antioxidant is reported to be 20x more powerful than vitamin C and 50x stronger than vitamin E. OPC strengthens capillaries, arteries and veins thus improving blood circulation. In a recent study, 30 diabetics were given 50mg of OPC 3x daily for 2 months while 10 were given placebo pills. The group that received OPC showed improved diabetic retinopathy while the group that received the placebo showed worsened retinopathy. Thus, OPC has proven to be valuable source of nutrition to promote health among diabetics.

5) Acelora Cherries & Blueberries

People who have diabetics have lowered immunity so their ability to fight against diseases and infections is weak. They need high phytochemicals wholesome plants to help fight against free radical damage and to nourish the body immune system.

We have the combination Everstay D, Stay D and Oxyginberry to help control the blood sugar level.

Everstay D contain soybean, psyllium husk, wheat bran and vanilla.

Stay D contain bitter melon, ginseng, blueberry and acelora cherry

13 September Health Talk by Dr Chen

Here is what I gained from Dr Chen Health Talk.  The links are further research done by me.

Why non smoker are still able to contract lung cancer and what's its prevention?
Cigarette smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer. However, there are non-smokers who still contract lung cancer due to Radon. Radon is a radioactive gas released from the normal decay of the elements uranium, thorium, and radium in rocks and soil. It is an invisible, odorless, tasteless gas that seeps up through the ground and diffuses into the air. People who live in ground floor has higher contact with Radon, therefore it is important to open the windows to have good ventilation in the house. If we are traveling and away from home for long duration, the amount of Radon trap in the house/rooms will be very high due to poor ventilation. Therefore, upon returning from traveling, we should open the windows immediately to allow good ventilation in the house/room.

30%of non-smoker get lung cancer through secondhand cigarette smoke. What is the distance to avoid secondhand cigarette smoke? There is no safe distance as the cigarette smoke will remain on the sofa, curtain and clothes of smoker. The smoker might ventilate the room or house after smoking. However, non-smoker/children will touch the chemical that is remain on the sofa, curtain or in contact with the smoker. Separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings cannot completely eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke

The third type of people that are high risk of lung cancer are miners. When working underground, miners can also be exposed to other substances that might affect lung cancer risk, such as radon.

Is diet able to build up immunity and prevent cancer?
A person will not have cancer as long as they have a strong immune system. Cancer takes a long time to develop and a person's immune system has to be malfunction for the cancer cell to multiply. It takes 6-8 years for breast cancer to grow from one cell to the size of 1 cm. It takes about 10-20 years for a person to develop lung cancer. For example, a person detected lung cancer at the age of 50 years old, it means that this person started having lung cancer at 30 years old. Therefore, prevention of cancer through the right nutrition is important. A lot of young people did not take care of their health when they are young and eat fried food, oily food, processed food and sleep late. However, prevention of diseases starts from young.

Can we detect cancer through x-rays and what happens when we take too much x-rays?The medical machine that we have is not able to detect cancer cell at the very beginning of cancer formation. The most advance machine can only detect tumors with diameters 1 mm. However, this 1 mm tumor is made up of at least 1 million cancer cells! By the time cancer is detected 2/3 of the cancer stage has passed. X-rays and gamma rays are known human carcinogens (cancer-causing agents). http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/radiationexposureandcancer/xraysgammaraysandcancerrisk/x-rays-gamma-rays-and-cancer-risk-do-xrays-and-gamma-rays-cause-cancer

What are the food that can boost immune system?
Scientists have studied the types of food that have highest Antioxidant, Phytochemical and Polysaccharides. Most of the disease fighting nutrients are in the fruits and vegetables. Have at least 2 meals of vegetarian out of 3 meals. Instead of having 4 meat dishes and 1 vege dish in a meal, we should eat more plant food 4 vege dishes and 1 meat dish. Diet that are high in animal protein can increase the risk of cancer. Meat contains a harmful substance (hormone) that causes cancer. Plant based Nutrition helps prevent cancer by boosting immunity. We can also increase food that are high in Polysaccharides. Lastly, live a healthy lifestyle - get enough exercise, get sufficient sleep and rest and stay positive.

How should we take our breakfast as we always hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day?

Any food and nutrients that we eat in the morning are easily absorb by our body.  We should drink plenty of water early in the morning as our body is performing the function of detoxification when we are sleeping at night. Food that are high in fiber is good as it acts like a broom to clean the intestine. Do not take any oily food, meat, ham, bacon and sausages.  Ham, Bacon and Sausages contain nitrosamine, a carcinogen. A person can only take a maximum 300mg of cholesterol. 2 chicken eggs for breakfast have already exceeded the daily cholesterol limit. Take the whole fruit instead of fruit juice. Juices without the fiber are high in sugar.
